VOTERS headed to the polls today just hours after many turned out to hear what the six hopeful MPs for Chichester had to say.

In a packed-out Chichester Cathedral, candidates went head to head answering a number of questions submitted by the public, watched over by cathedral dean Stephen Waine.

National opinion polls have shown Conservatives and Labour neck and neck over the last few days, and even if one party emerges the winner, neither are expected to have a majority of MPs in the House of Commons.

Candidates in Chichester are Andrew Emerson (Patria), Mark Farwell (Labour), Andrew Moncreiff (UKIP), Jasper Richmond (Green), Andrew Smith (Liberal Democrat) and Andrew Tyrie (Conservative).

In 2010’s general election 56,787 people cast their votes in Chichester – a turnout of 69.7 per cent.

Polls open at 7am and close at 10pm, with Chichester District Council elections running alongside the national poll.

In 2010’s general election Sussex returned 13 Conservative MPs, two Lib Dems and one Green, with six seats changing hands.

Whatever happens across Sussex, several constituencies are guaranteed to return new MPs with politicians standing down in Bexhill and Battle, Horsham, Wealden, and Hove.

According to the Met Office voters heading out today can expect a dry and mostly sunny day across Sussex.
