Preston Park will be the epicentre of the battle between the Green Party and the Labour Party when it comes to the city council elections on May 7.

Noticeably, no other party - apart from a single UKIP candidate - has yet selected candidates here.

Two of Labour's most experienced - and most left-leaning - councillors lost their seats here in 2011. Kevin Allen is determined to fulfil his ambitions to be elected to the seat he lost last time around - although Juliet McCaffery, Mr Allen's erstwhile colleague in Preston Park, has been forced to try her luck in neighbouring Withdean.

Neil Schofield, an intelligent and articulate blogger, is a former Green Party member - who has chosen to stand here rather than in his home ward of Patcham. In a largely-affluent ward, where the branch party has lost a lot of its former momentum, Julie Cattell is the other Labour candidate.

For the Greens, Councillor Leo Littman is standing again and is sure to give Labour a run for their money. The choice of Rob Shepherd, the influential and likeable spokesperson for Brighton and Hove Green Party, shows his party recognise the importance of the seat. Georgina Turner is a programme officer for the Climate Parliament, which describes itself as "an international cross-party network of legislators, dedicated to preventing climate change and promoting renewable energy".
