What would be the best use for Bognor's seafront beacon?

Would you pay £500 to have the seafront beacon lit up for a special occasion?

That is what the town council has asked this week as it looks to make the metal structure more of a standout feature.

It was raised at a meeting of the events, promotion and leisure committee in December and members discussed a number of ways of using the beacon.

It was suggested that members of the public could use it to mark special occasions. Research will be carried out to see if it is something the public would be interested in, although it is in early stages.

Part of that initial research includes a poll which has been posted on social media this week.

Cllr Steve Goodheart said he was hopeful about the feedback.

He said: “I think it would be lovely if people took the opportunity to do it to mark a birthday or marriage. [The proposed cost] is slightly expensive but then some people might not think it is expensive at all. It’s an area which I think should be explored.”

Cllr Jim Brooks echoed that sentiment and said: “Our promenade needs some TLC. It’s all very well looking up high street schemes but there are a lot of little improvements we could make so when people travel here for promotions we are showing them the very best of Bognor.”

Another idea for the beacon was a selfie area attached to the beacon.

Cllr Brooks said: “It would be good when people are around and they would be taking pictures in good weather — it would be good for Bognor. It’s in a prime position so it should be a feature.”

A council spokesman said: “The idea is very much in the early stages. No decisions have been made and the post on Facebook is just to gauge the initial reaction from the community.

“If the feedback is positive members may request more research to provide accurate costings, including resources and event planning requirements to be undertaken.”

At the time of writing the poll results tilt away from the idea, with 60 per cent saying it is not something they might consider for themselves. A number of comments under the Facebook post say the £500 figure would be too high.
