Works to replace A23 traffic lights at Ifield

Motorists using the A23 through Ifield are due to face two weeks of disruption due to works to replace '˜obsolete' traffic lights.

West Sussex County Council is due to start upgrading the traffic signals at the junction with Ifield Community College on Monday July 25.

Contractors are set to complete all the works during the day, and the A23 will be reduced to one lane in both directions at certain times, with temporary signals operating.

This may lead to slow traffic and queuing approaching the junction, according to the county council.

The new signals will be more reliable and save on maintenance costs and energy for the next 15 years, as the county council said that the existing traffic lights are ‘old, obsolete and their condition has deteriorated’.

John O’Brien, WSCC’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We are being proactive here and replacing these signals with the latest technology.

“There is no getting away from the fact the lights are old and beginning to fail.

“Replacement parts are becoming obsolete.

“The new signals will save on repairs and reduce the likelihood of faults disrupting motorists in future.”

He added: “We apologise for any inconvenience this causes and ask people to find alternative routes, particularly at peak hours.”
