Dan Muddle, who is just 18 years old, was thrilled to learn that he had been elected to stand as a parish councillor for Washington last week.

“I feel brilliant,” said Mr Muddle. “It’s a really cool thing. Now I can bring some young energy to the council.”

The former Steyning Grammar School student’s family moved to Washington when he was two years old and he has since become a familiar face in the community.

“I did a bit of campaigning. We had my name printed on pens and magnets.

“Luckily everyone in Washington knows me and knocking on people’s doors was just an opportunity to say I’m standing for parish councillor. A lot of people asked me if it’s because I’m interested in politics but I’m not, it’s because I’m so passionate about Washington.”

Working as a promotional project expert at Sussex Promotions Ltd in Portslade, Mr Muddle is also a young entrepreneur who launched his own clothing range at just 16 years old.

“I set out to do what other teenagers don’t normally do. Why bother about your age? If a 40-year-old can do it then so can an 18-year-old.”

Parish council chairman Patrick Heeley, said: “It’s refreshing to find someone of Dan’s age who’s keen to become a parish councillor and do their bit to support the community.”

Mr Muddle, who also attended Washington primary school and Rydon Community College in Storrington, hopes that by bringing young blood to the council, he can represent the voices of local youth.

“Other than the playground and the all weather football pitch, there’s nothing for the young to do.”

The councillor also hopes to encourage more trade after the loss of the Appledown Larder grocery shop in London Road.

“I get a buzz from being the youngest, that’s what motivates me.

“I just want to thank everyone for their votes.”

Mr Muddle has already joined the Open Spaces, Recreation and Allotments Committee.
