Poll shows most support eco-town

Ford eco-town supporters drew strength this week from a poll which showed support for such schemes.

A YouGov poll released last weekendfound 46 per cent of respondents tended to, or strongly, support the development of eco-towns. Almost as many '“ 45 per cent '“ were neutral or felt unable to comment. Only nine per cent opposed eco-towns.

The almost 5:1 split in favour comes despite weeks of high-profile attacks on the eco-town proposals from media personalities and local pressure groups alike. Nearly eight out of ten people '“ 79 per cent '“ acknowledged a shortage in affordable housing in their area with nearly three-fifths (58 per cent) saying there is very little or no affordable housing within five miles of their home.

The findings reflect the situation in Arun where the average family would need a mortgage 11 times their weekly wage to buy a home. Only 63 affordable homes have been built in the past two years despite 4,000 households on the council waiting list.
