POPULAR FAIR HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF WOOD

SOME 10,000 visitors attended the annual Wood Fair on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum.

Organised by East Sussex County Council, the fair promotes the importance of the region's wood to the environment and local economy, and is the leading wood-use event in the south-east.

More than 100 local businesses were present, ranging from tree surgeons and wood cutting equipment specialists to furniture makers and book clubs.

Said Cllr Matthew Lock, county member for the environment: 'Around 17 per cent of East Sussex is woodland, yet much of the wood we use in this country is imported.

'By supporting local businesses linked to woodland, and promoting the importance of sustainable woodland management, the Wood Fair helps to highlight woodland as a vital part of both the environment and the local economy.'

More unusual attractions included long bow demonstrations, a chainsaw sculpture and a stegosaurus-shaped seat.

There was also a local produce marquee selling honey, fruit, jams and soap.
