Popular village marathon director receives national award

The popular director of a village half-marathon has received a very special national honour.

Vernon Jennings, from Barns Green, has been awarded with a British Empire Medal for his work with the Barns Green Half Marathon and in the community.

He was presented with the Queen’s special honour by the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper, at Muntham House School, in Barns Green, yesterday evening (Wednesday December 16).

Vernon has been involved with race operations for more than 30 years and has been committee chairman and race director of the popular annual event since 1998.

He was crucial in saving the committee after it almost disbanded in 1998 and the event has since gone on to raised more than £130,000 for multiple charities.
