Post office workers' event in Devonshire Square

Post Office workers will on Saturday afternoon (July 4) an event in Devonshire Square to make the public aware of Government plans for the Royal Mail.

From 1pm onwards members of CWU will be gathering to express their views on future part-privatisation, according to local section secretary Paul Plim.

Paul said the Government's plans are currently be on hold according to Lord Mandelson this week but still remain on the statute books and are almost at the stage of second reading.

Paul commented: "We also want to make sure everyone is aware that MP Greg Barker is supporting the part-privatisation.

"I don't think he realises the number of people who are against it - there is overwhelming public opinion against privatisation of the Royal Mail.

"From all the opinion polls I have seen, there has been in the high 80/90 percent of people opposed to it.

"We are also going to be handing out leaflets for retired members - retired postmen and women who are no longer part of our union but want to express their views.

"This is going to be a pre-event for the major public event at Hastings town centre the next day when we will have postmen and women from all over the TN area coming down.

"I hope that anybody reading this who is opposed to privatisation of the Royal Mail will come along to show their support for us, and take away a postcard to send to Greg Barker to get him to support the early day motion that is coming through Parliament to stop part privatisation of the Royal Mail - and basically show Mr Barker that there is a group of people in this town who support him as an MP but who are opposed to his support of the Labour Government's part privatisation of the Royal Mail."
