Postal worker suspended on theft claims

A postal worker in Bognor Regis has been suspended on suspicion of stealing mail.

An investigation into the alleged actions of the delivery person is being carried out by Royal Mail bosses, it has been revealed.

A Royal Mail spokesman confirmed that an individual was suspected of failing to deliver letters and parcels, but declined to go into further details about the matter.

He said: "We don't comment on individual personnel issues but we have a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty.

"That stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of our people, who are honest and hard-working, and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

"Royal Mail customers should be confident in our services and systems.

"But we take decisive action to investigate where we are alerted to problems, either through our own stringent checks or from information supplied by our customers."

One of the residents who claims to have been affected by the missing mail is Aldwick Road resident Susan Dalton.

She said she suspected a problem with the mail after cards for her daughter's 14th birthday failed to arrive last Wednesday.

"I sent her off to school very happy. She and I anticipated a few cards through the post that day. Imagine my surpise when none arrived," explained Mrs Dalton.

"I called a few members of our family to find out that they had sent the cards on the Monday, January 12.

"By last Saturday, still nothing had arrived but, by now, I had found out that over ten cards had been sent on the Monday first-class.

"My daughter was devastated. Can you imagine how she felt? The only cards that she had were the ones delivered by hand."
