A DELUGE of up to 5,000 picture postcards of the proposed new Lewes Library - and the plea Let s Build It! - will swell the postbag of the leader of East Sussex County Council, Cllr Peter Jones, and other members in the coming weeks.

It s a reminder to councillors of what will be lost if they don t put the new library scheme back into the capital programme, said Joy Preston, chairman of Lewes Library Friends.

We have got to keep telling them how important it is.

The Friends this week were asking Lewes businesses to display the cards for customers to pick up and sign.

Each one is pre-addressed to Cllr Jones and may be posted or dropped off at the Albion Street library or at Pelham House, St Andrew s Lane.

The campaigners are demanding that the council makes the 2 million library scheme on the prestigious Lewes House town centre site a priority in 2002/03.

They plan to keep councillors minds focused on the scheme, which was 20 years in the pipeline, right up to February 18 next year when they have to vote on next year s building plans.

They will be constantly reminded that adapting the outgrown, dilapidated Albion Street library instead will waste taxpayers money, said a spokesman.

Grants and other aid now on offer to help along the new library will be lost, and the site quickly developed for other uses.

They are trying to put sticking plasters on broken bones. That won t cure the problem.

At coming elections councillors will be forced to admit that, having spurned the best opportunity there was for a new library, it will still have to be built, and it will need an awful lot more money the second time around.

People can get the postcards from some local shops or by ringing 01273 401368 or 471496.
