Poverty hits elderly

Low incomes are also blighting the lives of older residents around Bognor Regis.

Marine ward along the town's seafront is the worst for the over 60s having to scrimp and save.

The level of poverty among that age group is 23.5 per cent or 400 individuals. This is more than double the 9.6 per cent income deprivation for pensioners in West Sussex and well above the 15.2 per cent national level.

The area, with its large number of flats, contains significantly more senior citizen poverty than anywhere else in the Bognor area.

However, pensioners in Pevensey, Orchard and Hotham are also worse off than their counterparts around the country.
