POWER LINES FACE OBJECTIONS

The South Downs Campaign is formally objecting to the application by EDF Energy Networks to renew the overhead power lines between Lewes and Newhaven in the Ouse Valley.

The closing date for objections is June 2.

A campaign spokesman said: 'The overhead lines and their supporting pylons are currently a major blight on the landscape.

'The Ouse valley lies within the Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and designated South Downs National Park (awaiting confirmation) and these overhead power lines are considered by many to be particularly intrusive.

'The SDC is convinced that were there an application to build the overhead lines today, it is unlikely that they would be built under modern environmental standards. Consequently the SDC would like to see the application turned down and the power lines placed underground.'

Robin Crane, Chairman of the SDC said:

'This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to remove this scar on the landscape.

'The original power lines should never have been built and we doubt whether they would be allowed today.

'Therefore, we want to see every effort made for their removal.

'It might be more expensive than just simply replacing the overhead wires but it would be a small price to pay to restore the landscape to its previous splendour.'
