An Alfriston author has received praise from best-selling crime writer Peter James ahead of the release of her fourth book this week.

Fiona Cane has self-published her latest novel, called The Other Side of the Mountain, after going through a whirlwind of disappointments with various agents.

However, with the encouragement from fellow authors and her close friend Eddie Izzard, Fiona has overcome the odds to release her latest novel on August 6.

The Other Side of the Mountain is set in 2001, amid the political turmoil in Haiti. It focuses on three lives: Yolande, an impoverished farmer desperately looking for the sister her abusive husband has sold into slavery; Maddy, an eager British journalist on her first overseas assignment, set on making a name for herself; and Clare, an ex-pat gynaecologist who’s devoted the past eight years to healing Haiti’s downtrodden women.

Divided by language, lifestyle and personality yet all driven by painful memories buried in their pasts, the three women unite to search for the missing child.

Fiona, who is also a tennis coach, said: “There are so many layers to Haiti: its violent history, the racial conflict, the unbalanced class system, the heart-breaking poverty and suffering, its much maligned religion, and above all the courage the people have always shown in adversity. For me, Haiti is more than a setting for the book. It is a character in its own right.”

The Sussex author has been described as ‘a new and original talent in English fiction’ by renowned crime author Peter James, and writer Dreda Say Mitchell, said of The Other Side of the Mountain: “Both haunting and exhilarating, this beautifully written tale will keep you turning the pages until the very end.”

The Other Side of the Mountain is available to buy or download from Amazon.
