Praise for town creative centre

LORD Lieutenant of East Sussex Peter Field chatted to Rye artists when he visited The School Creative Centre,

He had heard of the venture and he was keen to learn more about the Creative Centre’s business model and its contribution to the Sussex economy.

Set up in 2008, in the de-comissioned Freda Gardham primary school, The School Creative Centre has established itself as a centre of creative excellence in East Sussex providing studio facilities for more than 30 artists and makers and offering a dynamic programme of events and workshops for adults and young people.

Ian Ross, The School Creative Centre’s Director, said: “We are at an exciting time in our development as a creative and cultural hub in East Sussex, and The Lord Lieutenant’s visit was an opportunity for us to show our business model in action and share our vision for its future sustainability.”

With an extensive background in business, regeneration and social enterprise, the Lord Lieutenant was particularly interested in how The School was able to generate an income for itself and the community it serves.

He commented: “At a time when funding for the arts is scarce it is exciting to see how a business model like The School can achieve success through its ability to forge partnerships, develop collaborations and be creative in their approach to business development.”

He continued: “I was really impressed to see how community, arts and business can work together to become a powerful and successful force, and I am not surprised that other local authorities and organisations are looking to use this as a model. I wish The School and its residents success and will be watching their future development with interest.”
