Pram race men tackle sponsored bike ride in the Pyrenees

Supporters of Pagham Pram Race are taking the event to the Pyrenees.

The backers are using two wheels on their cycles instead of the four on a pram for their sponsored ride.

The quartet are leaving Portsmouth Ferryport tomorrow evening for St Malo in France.

Their ride will start at 8am on Saturday, July 18 and end some 18 days, and more than a thousand miles, later at Torrevieja, just south of Alicante.

The riders are Nick Porter, Paul Moore, Graham Duguid and Keith Massett.

Mr Porter said he viewed the ride as a real challenge. "The training started back in November and went on throughout the cold winter months.

"To date, I have trained over 4,500 miles and feel fitter than any other time I can remember.

"The real test will be to cycle day after day for over two weeks in the heat of summer," he said.

Their route will take them through France over the Pyrenees mountains from Lannerezan to Saint Lary-Soulan.

They go through a two-mile tunnel into Spain and pass Parzan on the way to Babastro before the long haul to the finishing point.

The riders' progress will be placed on the www.paghampramrace.com website and updated daily.

The pram race began on Boxing Day 1946 and has since been held every year. It has raised many tens of thousands of pounds for good causes which benefit young and old residents.
