Pressing for talks

Pressure is still being placed on housing minister Yvette Cooper to talk to Arun District Council about the need for help for those wanting homes of their own.

The Observer reported in May that Ms Cooper had snubbed council leader Cllr Gill Brown's request for a meeting.

But Cllr Mrs Brown said she was not being deterred from pressing the local authority's case for more money for social housing.

She told council members last week: 'We have had meetings with the Government Office of the South East to insist we have that meeting with Ms Cooper.

'We have not given up on that. It is a case of watch this space.'

Lib Dem group leader Cllr Simon McDougall said Ms Cooper's officials had treated Arun disgracefully in even failing to phone the council to explain why the minister was unable to talk to Cllr Mrs Brown.
