Pressure grows in search for travellers' pitches

PRESSURE is on to provide an adequate number of extra caravan pitches for gypsies and travellers in West Sussex '“ and there has been criticism of most district and borough councils for being 'tardy' in coming forward with proposals.

It is believed that Arun District is the only one so far to have identified possible sites in its area.

Other councils have been warned that unless they take action they could have sites forced on them by central government.

A grand total of 177 extra caravan pitches for gypsies and travellers has got to be provided in West Sussex, with another 14 pitches on top of that for travelling showpeople, to meet figures issued by the South East Regional Assembly for new site provision.

The assembly has determined the number of new sites that are needed across the region, including in West Sussex.
