Prestigious award for Alexandra Park

A prestigious award has been made to one of the town's most popular attractions.

Alexandra Park was judged by the Civic Trust to be worthy of a coveted Green Flag. It was one of 253 open spaces across England and Wales to make the grade and had to meet strict guidelines.

Judges felt the park was excellently managed, friendly, welcoming and an interesting place to walk and play.

The park was judged on categories including health and safety, cleanliness and maintenance, conservation, and community and management.

Judges commented on the welcoming first impression and credited the park rangers for their care and dedication. They also complimented the use of the park for fishing and sport and the strength of community commitment through the Friends of Alexandra Park group.

Councillor Jay Kramer, deputy leader of the council, said: "We are very proud of Alexandra Park and of the management team, supported by our grounds maintenance contractor Onyx UK, all of whom are dedicated to caring and maintaining it. It is a fantastic community facility with something for everyone. Fifteen thousand visitors came along to the reopening in April, which showed just how many partners really appreciate it. This award is well deserved and is a credit to officers, maintenance staff and the Friends of Alexandra Park."

The park, designed by renowned landscaper Robert Marnock, was opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1882.

The Heritage Lottery Fund donated more than two and a half million pounds to its restoration and Hastings Borough Council contributed a further 800,000.
