Prestigious award given to hard-working nurses

Worthing nurses Sue McGill and Sandra House have been awarded the prestigious title of Queen's Nurse at a ceremony in London.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust nurses Sue and Sandra, received the award from chief nursing officer for England Jane Cummings.

The title of Queen’s Nurse recognises ‘continuing commitment to improving standards of care in the community and to learning and leadership’.

In total, eight nurses from Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust qualified as Queen’s Nurses: Georgina Colenutt, nurse safeguarding children from Storrington; Sandra House, specialist nurse safeguarding children from Worthing; Annette Lawrance-Owen, specialist nurse from Chichester; Susan Marshall, chief nurse from Ringmer; Sue McGill, clinical nurse lead from West Worthing; Patricia Obermayer, adult safeguarding nurse from Brighton and Hove; Francesca Sandilands, case manager from Burgess Hill and Trudy Ward, head of children’s community nursing from Brighton and Hove.

Sue said: “To become a Queen’s Nurse you need adaptability, flexibility, passion, integrity and professionalism. I’m really honoured to have received the award.” Sandra said: “Having been a nurse for 40 years from cadet nurse to today I am be immensely proud to have the opportunity tell my family I had been awarded the title of Queen’s Nurse.”

Ellie Wells, deputy chief nurse at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I want to pay tribute to the incredible work of these nurses and the positive impact they have on colleagues, their patients and their communities.”
