Primary Grand Prix Challenge

Number-crunchers from primary schools across Hastings took part in a Formula One challenge with a difference.

Youngsters had to use their maths skills to solve some real-life problems associated with preparing a car for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Teams of four had to use all their numerical nouse - and a bit of common sense - to prepare their 'virtual' car for the circuit.

All the data was then used to create a computer simulation of the Grand Prix, to see who would come out tops.

Donna Howell, of Helenswood School, where the challenge was hosted, said: "When it came to the race, the competition was very exciting - despite some schools forgetting that their cars would not make much progress without petrol!

"This was the first race in what is expected to become an annual event. All pupils and staff enjoyed taking part, especially applying what they have learned in school to the real world.

"It demonstrated there is a clear point to those complicated calculations!"

First place was awarded to St Paul's School with All Saints coming second and St Leonards C of E third.
