Project for town’s youth picks up award

A project which provides young people in Hailsham with organised outings has been voted one of the best of its kind.

The Friday Night Project (FNP) came second in the Children & Young People Participation category of this year’s SPARK Awards.

The project creates alternative recreational activities giving 12 to 17-year-olds opportunities and a sense of achievement in the process.

Hailsham Town Council’s (HTC) Square Youth Café and Hailsham Youth Council organises the project in partnership with other organisations.

Hailsham’s Cllr Jo Bentley accepted the award during a ceremony in Winter Gardens, Eastbourne on April 30.

She said: “This award is a fantastic way of acknowledging the achievements of the town council’s youth services and project partners, which make such a valuable contribution to the lives of young people in Hailsham.

“Getting involved in youth activities such as the Friday Night Project has a positive effect on the social and personal development of young people which will help them to realise their full potential.

“I am confident that the FNP’s organised activities will continue to be successful well into the future and encourage all young people in Hailsham to take advantage of the outings that are available to them and to get involved.”

Andy Joyes, HTC’s youth project coordinator, said the project was a good example of partnership in the community working at its best to provide affordable activities for young people.

He thanked volunteers Safer Wealden Partnership, Square Youth Café, Hailsham Youth Council, Hailsham Community College, Sussex Police and Targeted Youth Support for their support.

Additional activities have been organised for the next few months including dry-slope skiing and snowboarding, ten-pin bowling, Laserquest, ice skating and watching Brighton & Hove Albion football matches at the Amex Stadium, climbing and raftbuilding.

All young people in Hailsham are welcome to attend activities organised by The Square Youth Café and Hailsham Youth Council for the Friday Night Project.
