Projects shortlisted for engineering excellence awards

TWO high-profile projects in Robertsbridge and Rye have been shortlisted for an engineering award.

The Rother Valley Railway and Rye Harbour are among 10 infrastructure projects across East Sussex which have been shortlisted for the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South East England Engineering Excellence Awards 2013.

The awards recognise the best civil engineering projects across South East England, with the judges looking for projects that deliver a real benefit to society through the knowledge, skills and professional expertise of civil engineers.

Rother Valley Railway Heritage Trust submitted the £432,240 project at Robertsbridge, which aims to provide and refurbish five bridges as part of the restoration of this rail route.

Jackson Civil Engineering put forward the £9.7 million scheme to provide protection for Rye Harbour and nearby nature reserve by replacing a failing wall.

Director of ICE South East England, John Laverty, said: “Having the right infrastructure is a key factor to generate economic success and publicly rewarding the people, organisations and businesses which deliver that infrastructure is important because of the benefits such civil engineering projects bring to the community.

“The East Sussex shortlist, with schemes costing from £3,028 to £300 million, is emphasising that infrastructure investment at all financial levels can bring benefits for the local community.

“It is not the value or size of the project that will be judged but what benefits that project delivers.

“Past winners have ranged from £32,000 to multi-million projects.”

Judges are now examining the shortlisted entries in detail and the winners will be announced at the ICE Kent and East Sussex awards ceremony to be held at Leeds Castle in Maidstone on Friday June 7.
