Protestors rally against trade deal

Local members of the World Development Movement (WDM) and other concerned groups held placards and manned a stall, in Montague Street, as part of a day of simultaneous protests against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)– a proposed free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States.

The stall gave members of the public the chance to sign an EU wide petition, aiming for a million signatures, calling on the EU to hold a public debate on the deal.

Stall organiser and WDM member Dereck Prentis said: “We were very pleased with the response of people when they understood the implications of TTIP.

“It will extend the power of big business over our society to unprecedented levels. It is a massive corporate power-grab, putting big business before ordinary people, allowing companies to override elected governments.

“If enough people stand up against this deal, it can be stopped.”
