£1.50 parking charge on the way

LEWES residents and visitors could be paying to park their cars on the streets by the summer of next year.

That is when new on-street parking charges and residents' parking permits could be up and running.

Solar-powered ticket dispensers will be used for on-street parking in the town centre.

Vouchers will also be able to be purchased in shops for streets on the outskirts of the controlled area.

The costliest place to park will be Lewes High Street from the Bottleneck to Cliffe Corner where the charge will be 1.50 for a maximum stay of one hour only.

It will, however, cost only 15p an hour to park in The Avenue and the Pells.

Residents parking permits will cost 50 a year for the first car and 75 for a second.

Hundreds of people commented on the 'controlled parking scheme' at the recent Streets Ahead exhibition and officers have since reported: 'The consultation revealed a high level of interest in the scheme and strong support for the principles.'

As a result of the comments, a number of changes will be made.

The Houndean area will be excluded from the scheme and a number of other detailed changes will be made or discussed further with local people.

The northern Wallands area will not be included in the scheme despite requests from some residents.

Confirming the decision, cabinet member for transport, Cllr Tony Reid said: 'I want to reassure everyone that the scheme will be monitored and if it needs to be changed it will be.'

The scheme will be required to be self-financing through charges, and fines administered by council traffic wardens.

Any profits will be used on local transport schemes including traffic calming in the Cliffe.
