£1m boost launches care home into 21st century for residents

A near £1m investment has brought a Bognor Regis care home into the 21st century.

The large sum has transformed life in Aldersmead in Upper Bognor Road for the residents of its 38 refurbished bedrooms.

One of the residents, Kathleen White (75), who has lived there for 16 months, said: "The home has changed a lot and changed for the better.

"I like being independent with my en-suite facilities."

The new-look home was officially opened last weekby the town's mayor, Cllr Jennifer Gillibrand.

The home was originally opened in 1974 and bought by its present operator, Balcombe Care Homes Ltd, in September, 2006.

Managing director David Williams said: "The home was in a very poor state of repair when we took it on.

"Under the new star ratings, it probably would have been a zero.

"Now, it is two to three-star standard."

The extensive work has seen the previous 38, mainly single bedrooms, with community bathrooms replaced by fewer rooms.

"Most have en-suite facilities.

The home's garden has also been improved. Work to double the size of the dining room will take place next month.

A further five bedrooms are planned for next year to complete the transformation.

So far, the improvements have resulted in a handful of extra jobs to take the total number of staff at the home to 30.

The nursing staff are all professionally qualified and skilled in elderly and palliative care.

Care team members are trained to NVQ standards.

The care home has strong links with St Wilfrid's Hospice and provides end-of-life care for many terminally-ill people.
