£1million grant for Northbrook College

NORTHBROOK College’s vision for a high-quality technical and vocational centre at its Broadwater campus has taken a huge leap forward following the college securing a £1million grant.

The college has found out it has been awarded more than four times the sum it had sought from the government. Instead of a £225,000 grant from the Skills Funding Agency, the college has been told that £1million has been awarded for the long-awaited redevelopment.

Northbrook principal Sue Dare said: “We are delighted that our needs have been recognised by the new coalition government and we are able to build the college which the town deserves.”

The grant will pay for a large chunk of the £5million development project, which includes the demolition of some 90-year-old Nissen-type hut accommodation and replacing it with a three-storey teaching building, new entrance and reception area.

Northbrook College was one of only 15 colleges nationally to receive significantly more funding than was applied for.

Mrs Dare added: “The aim is to build a high-quality technical and vocational 14 to 19 centre for Worthing’s young people.

“The college’s goal to upgrade facilities at the site has won support from the local community, as well as local councillors and MPs.

“Architects’ plans have been submitted for planning permission and it is anticipated that construction will commence in January, 2011.”

Further education minister John Hayes gave an interview to the Herald after the funding announcement.

He said: “This £1million funding for Northbrook College is brilliant news. The Broadwater campus consists of out-dated 1920s buildings and this money will enable contemporary, high-quality buildings to be constructed, which will provide much-needed teaching space and brilliant facilities.

“This is a big project and we are delighted to support it. It’s great news for the college, its students and the community.”

Worthing College was also among the 149 colleges across Britain to benefit from a total of £50million government funding. The college, in Bolsover Road, was awarded £225,000 and is currently finalising plans for how it will be spent.
