A 2,000 reward has been offered in return for information about the incident which nearly resulted in the death of 23-year-old Daniel May.

Daniel, of Longview, Heathfield, was found lying in Burwash Road on the night of Sunday, August 25. He was just yards from the Crown pub where he had been drinking previously.

Police do not know if he was attacked or hit by a car, but he suffered serious head injuries and spent the next four weeks on a life support machine.

Now the charity Crimestoppers is putting up a 500 reward for any information which leads to the arrest of the person or people responsible for his injuries. This money will be added to the 800 already raised by Daniel's workmates at PJ Skips in Hailsham, and cash put up by Daniel's family.

According to hospital sources, Daniel's condition is improving and he is off the life support machine. He regained consciousness this week for the first time since the accident and is now in Eastbourne hospital's high dependency unit.

Police investigators still know very little about how Daniel came to receive such serious injuries but they know the incident must have occurred at around 11.15pm.

Colleague Nick Ellwood from PJ Skips said this week: 'We would urge anyone who saw or knows anything about this incident to come forward.

'The person who could do something like that to someone as friendly and easy-going as Daniel needs to be brought to justice.

'Of course, we're highly delighted that he has finally regained consciousness, but it means this is a very scary time for him. His parents and other members of his family have been by his bedside since it happened.'
