£4 million Lottery joy for De La Warr Pavilion

JUBILATION greeted the announcement on Monday that the seven-year campaign to secure Lottery funding for the De La Warr Pavilion has been successful.

The Arts Lottery Board is giving a 4.1m grant towards refurbishment of the Grade One Listed building. The Heritage Lottery Board had already earmarked 1.9m contingent on the Arts board's decision.

The cash will enable the costly repair programme started by Rother to be completed.

The aim is to make the pavilion a major centre for art, architecture and live performance in the South East while retaining its role as the focal point of the Bexhill community.

Work, including the creation of a new education, rehearsal and meeting hall called The Studio, is scheduled to start in 2003 and be completed by 2004.
