£472k jackpot for Littlehampton man

PLUCKY punter Adam Phillips walked off with more than £427,000 after a £2 bet in Little-hampton.

Mr Phillips, who lives in Littlehampton with his wife Sue and their young son Charlie, placed the winning Scoop 6 bet while out in town with his family on Saturday.

While Sue and Charlie, two-and-a-half, enjoyed the carnival activities in the High Street, Adam popped into the William Hill betting shop in Beach Road to place the bet.

The electrician picked the winners in each of the six Scoop 6 races to win a massive jackpot of 427,434.

This superb total may even be added to should he pick the winner of the Scoop 6 bonus race on Saturday at Newbury, netting him another 183,186.

Speaking to the Gazette yesterday (Wednesday) after he was presented with his cheque in Chichester, Mr Phillips said he was thrilled to be able to leave his job at the restaurant at Little-hampton's Tesco and even confessed to calling in sick on the Sunday morning.

"I just knew I wouldn't be able to give it my full attention," he said.

Describing the moment his final horse came in as he watched on television, Mr Phillips said: "I just couldn't believe it. I was shaking like a leaf and had to keep checking the ticket to make sure. I knew I had won but I still doubted it and it still hasn't really sunk in.

"I even had to go down to the betting shop in Wick to ask them to check it for me.

"I've been betting for 20 years and up until this I had only won about 2,000 in total. It's amazing."

Planning how he will spend his money, Mr Phillips said he may take his family back to Spain where they had moved last year to live but were forced to return when he couldn't find enough work.

"The main thing is that I now have enough money to buy a decent house for my family and that will help give my son a better chance in life," he said.

"Winning the extra money would be nice. It would be a real bonus but I'm just happy to have won this amount."

His winning selections were '” Vicious Warrior (10/1) in the 2.10pm at York, Song Of Passion (13/2) in the 2.25pm at Chester, Prospect Court (15/8F) in the 2.40pm at York, Cesare (11/4) in the 2.50pm at Ascot, Charlie Tokyo (11/1) in the 3.15pm at York and Countdown (6/1) in the 3.50pm at York.
