£475k bill for Worthing human trafficking couple

A JAILED couple have been told they must hand over almost half a million pounds they made from illegally trafficking immigrants and forcing them to work in their Worthing care homes.

Mauritian-born Shamila, 57, and Anbanaden Chellapermal, 63, of Queens Gate, London, were part of an international trafficking network which lured poor Mauritian workers to this country with the promise of wages four times greater than what they could earn at home.

The pair were each found guilty of human trafficking and knowingly employing illegal workers at care homes Glen Eden, in Richmond Road, and Carleton House, in St Lawrence Avenue, between November, 2007 and July, 2008.

For their part in the illegal enterprise, they were each sentenced to two years in prison in July 2009.

Following on from that, police completed a confiscation process allowing them to reclaim almost 500,000 of the couple's ill-gotten gains.

Shamila, also known as Shala, and Anbanaden, forced three women and a man from Mauritius to come to England and work in the care homes for up to 90 hours a week for only 450 a month, caring for vulnerable and elderly people.

Following the convictions of the couple, financial investigators from Sussex Police worked to identify money earned by them and property they owned.

A 450,000 confiscation order was made under the Proceeds of Crime Act at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, August 6.

The couple will also have to pay 25,000 costs.
