Pub drugs tests

A 30ft-long new "mobile police station" complete with four cells was in support as officers carried out pub drugs tests in Bexhill.

Last Friday's testing at The York in London Road was carried out with the agreement of the licensee as part of the ongoing Operation Vertical crack-down by Sussex Police.

Inspector Dick Coates, head of the Bexhill Neighbourhood Policing Team, said Operation Vertical was proving a great success.

Inspector Coates said that of 147 York patrons tested in Friday night's operation, 10 tested positive and were found to have traces of Class A drugs in their systems.

The 10 were questioned but the mobile police station and its cells were not required as there were no arrests.

Inspector Coates said other local licensees were requesting drug-testing visits under Operation Vertical.

Patrons at the Devonshire Arms were tested last month in the first such raid in Bexhill using specialised new Ion Track testing equipment.

The project is fully supported by Barwatch, the collaborative effort between police and the licensed trade to keep trouble-makers out of pubs.
