Pub Olympics in Jamie's memory

OLYMPIC sports on a miniature scale came to Littlehampton on Saturday to help raise money in memory of Littlehampton man Jamie Buckfield who died last month.

Peanut shot put, cocktail stick javelin and beer mat discus were among the events at the Dolphin pub in High Street.

The event, which also included an auction, table sale, karaoke, plant sale and barbecue has raised a fantastic 2,800 so far but that total is expected to rise above 3,000 when all the money is collected.

The Dolphin's landladies Ellie and Katie Boiling, organised it to raise money for the Joshua Foundation, which arranges trips and activities for children with life-limiting illnesses.

Jamie himself had wanted the charity to be the beneficiary of any future fundraising efforts.

Ellie said: "I am so grateful to the traders of Littlehampton who donated raffle prizes to and supported us and to Littlehampton's mayor Dr James Walsh for coming along on the day and joining in the fun.

"People really came together and got involved. They should be proud of themselves, because of their kindness a child will have one last wish granted and their loved ones will have those memories forever."

Jamie's mum Tracey Terry told the Gazette: "It was a brilliant day, considering what the weather was like.

"There were so many people there wanting to help out and get involved it was great. We ran a tombola but there were so many other things going on.

"So many people had put a lot of effort into the day, especially Ellie and to have raised so much money if brilliant. I am really grateful to everyone who supported it."

Tracey said that since Jamie passed away, Portsmouth Football Club, which he had visited only weeks before he died, had offered to mount a plaque in their ground in his honour.

"He loved visiting the club and meeting the team," she said, "and they have offered to sign a shirt for next year's fundraiser."
