Public anger against commissioners makes church publication

Opponents of a 2,500-home scheme for North Bersted have gained national coverage of their fight.

They have succeeded in getting their battle against the site's major landowner, the Church Commissioners, featured in The Church Times.

The article details the anger residents feel towards the commissioners' haste in devising detailed plans for the major development off Chalcraft Lane while Arun District Council has yet to decide which land to earmark for future building.

One of the leading protestors, Iain Palot, is quoted in the article as saying: "The Church Commissioners are single-handedly destroying what is essentially a semi-rural environment.

"The church is complicit in the deal of selling it off."

The commissioners emphasise they are working closely on the proposals, which will also feature a small industrial estate, with the relevant authorities.

Their head of planning and development, Stephen Melligan, described the plans as groundbreaking in their eco-credentials.
