The Beeding Bridge in Upper Beeding will close for five weeks from Monday (January 20) so essential repair works can be carried out.

West Sussex County Council found that the bridge needed strengthening so buses and heavy vehicles can continue to cross it safely.

Pieter Montyn, County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “This is a task which has to be done, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause while the bridge is closed.”

He added: “We feel it is preferable to shut it for five weeks while work takes place than allow it to deteriorate and cause greater disruption in the long term.”

A signed diversion will be put in place for motorists along the A283 between Steyning and Upper Beeding to allow for the work to take place.

The footbridge next to Beeding Bridge will remain open and will be unaffected by the ongoing work allowing pedestrians to cross.
