Rother District Council’s lead members were generally supportive of the petition-based scheme for a development’s opposition to have their say while it is being discussed by the committee, according to the minutes.

Although some cabinet members were sceptical about the value of public-speaking, most were pleased as it would ‘allow all parties to hear an application in an open, transparent and controlled way’.

The scheme should be in place by December ‘at the latest’ and a review into its performance will be undertaken 12 months after its implementation, if full council agrees with cabinet’s recommendation.

The next full council meeting is on May 16.
