PUBS SUPPORT DRINK DRIVE CAMPAIGN

PUBS and supermarkets have joined forced with Sussex Police and East Sussex County Council to help promote the Department of Transport's Christmas drink-drive campaign.

Inspector Steve Grace from Sussex Police Polegate road policing department said: 'It is a myth that there is a safe level of alcohol which can be consumed before driving.

'Alcohol will impair a driver's reactions and a conviction for driving whilst impaired carries the same penalties as driving over the limit.

'We will continue to target and arrest those people who put innocent members of the community at risk by driving under the influence of drugs or having consumed alcohol.'

Eastbourne Buses will be driving the message home over the festive season, with don't drink and drive posters on the inside and outside of the buses.

County's road safety team and Sussex police have been holding exhibitions in shopping centres, supermarkets and council buildings over the last month to raise awareness of the dangers of drink driving.

Posters and leaflets have been distributed to all East Sussex libraries, schools, colleges and County Council offices.

Transport lead member Cllr Matthew Lock said: 'There are too many irresponsible drivers who think they can drink alcohol and still drive safely, despite the fact that in 2004, 590 people were killed in drink drive related crashes.

'This is a recipe for disaster.

'Not only are these drivers breaking the law, they are risking their lives and those of other road users. 'Motorists can't calculate their own drink drive limits - if they plan to drive, the only safe thing is to drink nothing.'
