Pupil wins science competition

A pupil from St Richard's Catholic College has achieved success in a national science competition.

Jack Butcher from Year 8 was a winner in the Salters Nobel Prize Challenge.

The chemical company, Salters, publishes its' periodical "Salters Journal magazine" monthly and regularly includes competitions for Key Stage Three learners.

Salters are the parent group behind the Young Investigator's Science club which is run for Year 7s weekly at lunchtimes at St.Richard's by Science teacher Ben Corbishley assisted by fellow Science teacher Julie Durkin.

Ben Corbishley said: "The idea behind the club is to give students keen on Science a chance to come along and do some interactive practical activities. We also use everyday items to show the students that science is all around them."

Jack stayed with the club throughout Year 7 and the competition involved pupils investigate some Nobel prize winning scientists and answering questions about them.

Jack was awarded with a Salters logo mouse mat, a certificate and his name will be published in the next magazine.

He was happy on hearing about his success and said : "I was thrilled to win the competition. Being in the Young Investigators Club has taught me about Science in a fun way.

"I'll definitely continue to take part in Year 8 and I am looking forward to helping the new Year 7s who join this year".
