Staff and students at Beacon Academy were put “on lock down” after reports of a gunman near the school.

The incident happened at 4pm after PE staff were told a member of the public was walking around the Green Lane Woods with a potential/suspected firearm.

The school immediately phoned the police and all staff and students were held in the sports hall while investigations took place.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “Concerns raised by the sighting of a man possibly carrying a shotgun near the Beacon Community Academy, East Beeches Road, Crowborough, on Tuesday afternoon were allayed after police attended and searched the area with no trace of anything untoward.

“Officers worked with the school to ensure any precautions it considered appropriate were taken.”

In a letter to parents, head teacher Anna Robinson said: “In situations such as this, I have to take these reports extremely seriously.

“I immediately responded to this by calling the police. As a precautionary measure we escorted all staff and students to a safe location in our sports hall until the Police had given us full clearance. Green Lane and Tiddlers Nursery also adopted a similar lock down procedure.

“I informed the students and staff once we were all in place about the report. I only released the students once we had full clearance from the Police about 10 minutes later.”
