Pupils get a gem of an idea

POSTERS that are in themselves real gems have been produced by a group of primary school children in response to a special diamond jubilee challenge.

Little Common Horticultural Society challenged Little Common School to come up with some eye-catching ideas to mark the group's 60th anniversary.

Chairman Barbara Lenny and president Beryl Brand visited the school to congratulate the nine youngsters who have been working on the posters.

Teachers Zoe Patch and Louise Duffy have been guiding the youngster through what has been a learning process embracing not only art but computer studies and literacy.

The pupils spoke enthusiastically of the lunch-time sessions they have put into the project.

"We have made designs and we have included flowers. We had to include the words 'Sixty years of success' and 'Little Common Horticultural Society' said one of the girls..

"Some of us have been doing computer pictures and things" said one of the boys.

Asked if they had enjoyed the challenge of meeting the Horticultural Society's requirements, the entire group chorused "Yes!"

Zoe Patch said: "It's been excellent. They have been so engaged in it. They have had a purpose."

The results include collages with three-dimensional flowers and flower tubs.
