Pupils helped design eye-catching revamp

SOON it won't be all swings and roundabouts as work to revamp a Flansham playground begins.

Children from Bishop Tufnell School in Felpham, have worked with Arun District Council on the eye-catching designs for Flansham Lane play area after being asked what they would like to see.

Paul Dendle, Arun’s cabinet member for the environment, said: “We asked the children for their input as we felt they were the real experts on what makes a good playground.

“They told us they like zip wires and climbing walls and similar pieces of equipment so that’s what we’ve provided.

“We’ve incorporated a lot of plants and foliage to make a really attractive, practical new play area which we hope will be enjoyed by children of all ages but will also compliment the new housing and blend in with the natural environment.”

Work started on Tuesday to install the large fun zone which will include a small football area, a range of swings and climbers for varying age groups and a zip wire or aerial runway.

The play equipment includes new tree planting and other elements of nature will be incorporated into the design. All the new facilities will be installed to modern safety standards.

The work is being carried out by Barratt Homes as part of the Site 6 development in Felpham where several play areas are being provided alongside the new housing.

Arun District Council, which owns and manages the land, is hoping to recycle as much of the old equipment as possible in other playgrounds.

A new access bridge is also due to be constructed which will provide links to and from the new housing next to the green space.

It is anticipated the work to complete the new play area will take about six weeks before it is unveiled to the public.
