Pupils learn not to play with fire

The East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have been in school to give their annual lessons to Years 2, 5 and 6.

The KS1 children learnt about the dangers of fire and matches through the rhyme, ‘Matches Matches do not touch, they can hurt you very much!’ They also learnt about the hazards of having too many plugs in one socket. Pupils were also taught about what to do if a fire breaks out in their home, and the information they would need to give when dialling 999 in an emergency.

The children in KS2 had to come up with a plan of action, should a fire break out in their homes. They learned about the dangers of smoke and its effects through a quick quiz and class discussion.

Over the last couple of weeks PC Gaynor Oakensen, our School Liaison Officer, has visited each class throughout the school, delivering lessons as part of the Sussex Police Education Programme. The subjects have ranged from helping children to keep themselves safe in the community to teaching children how they should take responsibility and respect the property of others in their local community.

The underlying principles of the lessons are to educate the children in order to prevent them from becoming victims or offenders of crime.
