PUPILS at Cross in Hand Primary School have been acting as junior detectives this week.

The children are taking part in a Science Week held by the school as part of Science Year 2002. Activities focused on a 'mysterious happening' over the weekend. Each class attempting to solve the mystery have been given a different set of evidence.

Clues have included identikits, handwriting analysis, fingerprints, hair samples, soil samples and paint splashes. The pupils have investigated what the clues told them about the suspect and which of the suspects were guilty. In assemblies, the whole school has had the chance to share their results and receive new pieces of information.

Today police liaison officer PC Kate Brookman will visit Year 3 to show them how the police find and identify fingerprints. She has also provided information as to how a real police investigation is carried out.

Michelle Moss, school science co-ordinator, said: 'This is an enjoyable opportunity to explore how science is used in real life.'

Nine other primary schools in the Heathfield area are also taking part in the forensic science project.
