Quarry lorries blamed for Midhurst road damage

HEAVY lorries going to Pendean quarry at West Lavington are being blamed for serious deterioration to the road surface on Rumbolds Hill in Midhurst.

A large pothole has appeared close to the Wheatsheaf pub in addition to six areas of tarmac along the centre where the surface is cracking.

Chairman of the town council, John Etherington said the deterioration was causing concern and it had been reported to West Sussex County Council’s highways officers.

Midhurst town councillors have already voiced concern that the lorries travelling to the quarry were increasing damage to the town’s roads.

They objected to plans from Inert Recycling UK to increase the daily number from an average of 14 to 50 and the application was refused by the South Downs National park before Christmas.

Midhurst county councillor Gordon McAra said he had asked highways officers for plans to reconstruct the road: “There is now rubble coming out of the holes and it has become dangerous. It is no coincidence this has happened at the same time as the waste lorry movements through Midhurst to West Lavington.”
