Queen and Prince put a smile on face of town

THE sun shone down on the hundreds of well wishers who packed into Queens Square to catch a glimpse of the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Crawley Millennium Band entertained the excited crowd which included local dignitaries councillors and residents with a selection of popular tunes.

The royal party arrived by helicopter and landed at Southgate Playing Fields '“ they were then driven to Queens Square in a burgundy Rolls Royce.

Hordes of enthusiastic onlookers applauded as the Queen drove into the square where she was greeted by a sea of Union Jacks waved by residents and schoolchildren from Manor Green and Northgate Primary School.

The Millenium band then played the national anthem before the mayor, Sally Blake, welcomed the Queen to the town.

She said: "Crawley is delighted to welcome you to the town, the town's coat of arms says 'I grow and I rejoice' and that has certainly been the case seen 1958.

"The town is still growing we have a rich, diverse and multicultural population of over one hundred thousand people of which we are hugely proud and we are particularly pleased as we move towards our 60th anniversary.

"I hope you enjoy your visit and you get to see for yourself our thriving and vibrant town"

The Queen who was wearing a dark pink coat, trimmed with a black collar and a black and pink hat, stopped to greet local dignitaries and schoolchildren.
