Queen salutes housing scheme

DEVONPORT House in Rye has received a letter from Buckingham Palace to celebrate its 30th birthday.

Part of Sussex Housing and Care, Devonport House provides accommodation to 18 older people and a scheme manager who helps run the site and supports residents.

The letter from Susan Hussey, Lady-in-Waiting says “Her Majesty sends her congratulations and good wishes to all the residents of Devonport House, and hopes that they will much enjoy the celebrations.”

Opened in June 1982 by the late Queen Mother, the residents look back fondly at the opening day photos and often reminisce about their happy lives at Devonport House.

Irene Wright, resident at Devonport House for 25 years said: “Receiving the celebratory letter from Buckingham Palace has been a very nice acknowledgement. We are going to frame it and put it alongside the pictures we have in the lounge of the Queen Mother opening the house.
