Members and associates of the Exel Retired Staff Association tucked into tasty sandwiches and scones with cream, surrounded by Union Flags.

Chairman Dorothy Allwright said: “We will never see anything like this again in our lifetime so we thought it would be a nice thing to do.

“We also sent a card to Buckingham Palace.”

The group, which has been going for 26 years, is made up of retired freight workers from companies like Pickfords and has more than 60 members from Eastbourne to Rustington.

Members meet once a month for coach trips and also has an annual dinner at the Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton.

Raffles are held throughout the year and the money raised is matched by DHL, the parent company. It is then donated to a nominated charity each year.
