Question time returns to Town Forum in Pavilion

THE OUTGOING chair of Bexhill Town Forum will stand for re-election at the next meeting, saying more should be done to modernise the group.

Paul Plim (right) launched his tenure by securing thousands of pounds of sponsorship from Hastings Local, and showcasing a revamped town forum in the De La Warr Pavilion.

And on Tuesday September 21, he will aim to continue the work he began one year ago.

His vice chair, Sean O'Brien, will not stand for re-election.

"There's still work to be done to re-vitalise the forum," said Paul. "We want to modernise it and drag as many people from the town in as possible to have a say about the issues that concern them."

Those present will vote on two controversial issues - the rural review which Bexhill firefighters claim could result in job losses and less cover for local residents, and the privatisation of Royal Mail.

The question-time style format returns with a panel including leader of the council Carl Maynard, deputy leader Robin Patten, Lib Dem leader Sue Prochak and Cllr Joy Hughes.

"Our feedback from the last meeting was very positive," said Paul. "People liked the more professional atmosphere the De La Warr provides, and we managed to double our attendance.

"There has been a small history of conflict between councillors and some members of the forum, but the question-time was well received by councillors as well as the public. We are hoping to open that up as we progress."

Readers are invited to submit questions on local government finance for the next meeting, and RDC's top team of Malcolm Johnson, head of resources, and Robin Vennard, head of finance will be on hand to give a short presentation.

Paul described the topic as "vital", pointing to the government's October spending review and Monday's RDC Cabinet meeting, where members agreed service cuts were inevitable.

"This will give people a very good opportunity to put across their views on what services should stay and what should be cut," said Paul.

The meeting's agenda also features an update on Bexhill's Local Action Plan, reports from the Youth Council, and a presentation from Egerton Park Children's Centre.

'¢ The Bexhill Town Forum starts at 6.30pm on Tuesday, September 21 in the De La Warr Pavilion.
