Racer, ten, rescued from Angmering crash

The youngster, who is a member at the Oval Raceway, in Water Lane, suffered a suspected spinal injury when he lost control of his vehicle.

Two fire crews from Worthing, along with the heavy rescue tender vehicle from the station, were called to cut the schoolboy out of the car, arriving at 4.49pm.

It took 30 minutes for the hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the roof of the car. The young racer, who was complaining that his neck was hurt, was then strapped to a spinal before being transported to Worthing Hospital for a precautionary check by doctors.

Worthing watch commander Darren Wickings said the child was shaken up by the ordeal but was otherwise in good spirits.

“It was quite frightening for him but I guess he was quite used to a few dents and crashes being a banger car racer,” he said

Darren added that the move was a precautionary measure.

“It’s always better to be safe than sorry when neck injuries are concerned.”
