Raft racers prepare to set sail

FOR THE most fun you can have outside of your own bath take part or watch the chaotic spectacle of the annual Lewes to Newhaven Raft Race.

This year's event, organised by the Lewes Round Table, takes place on August 1.

Competitors start at Lewes Rowing Club and race down the Ouse to Newhaven. Spectators have been known to make the challenge even more treacherous by throwing eggs and flour at the crews.

As usual there promises to be a bizarre collection of home-made crafts and rafts this side of the Bermuda Triangle.

Last year 15 rafts competed the race and raised 1,500 for Round Table charities and a further 1,500 was raised by individual rafts for their own causes.

Ady Marshall, from Lewes Round Table, said: 'The race is now in its 33rd year, and to honour the Beijing Olympics we've decided this years' theme is Olympics past and present. Whilst a team of rowers may be the quickest, a baseball team wearing protective hats may have a greater advantage!

'Teams could be dressed as fencers, sumo Wrestlers, golfers, synchronised swimmers or a four-man Bobsleigh. 'The list is endless so choose a theme and enter today.'

It costs 95 per raft to enter the race and there are various prizes on offer, including fastest time, most devious means and best-decorated raft.

This year's race has been sponsored by Oakdene Homes which has helped with the rising health and safety costs of the event.
